Carlinville, Marquette set for round two

After winning their first Regional title in school history last year, the Carlinville High School girls’ soccer team set their sights on repeating that feat this year. The Illinois High School Association raised the ante when they assigned Carlinville to the same Regional as Marquette Catholic, last year’s state runner-up in Class A. The Lady Explorers got the top seed for the Regional with Carlinville seeded second, but a week after those seeds came out, Carlinville won their first-ever South Central Conference championship by beating Marquette at Moore Park on penalty kicks. It ended an unbeaten streak of 85 games (84-0-1) by the Explorers in conference play.

Lady Cavaliers Conference Champions!!
The history of girls’ soccer at Carlinville High School includes a high winning percentage, tournament championships, and regional championships. However, a conference championship has always been missing. Marquette Catholic had won every South Central Conference championship while compiling an 84-0-1 record in conference matches. That unblemished conference record is no more. Carlinville and Marquette battled to a 1-1 tie through two overtime periods before the Lady Cavaliers stunned the Explorers by winning the match 3-2 on penalty kicks May 6 at Gordon Moore Park in Alton.

Gillespie, Staunton could return to SCC
While nothing is official just yet, it appears that major changes are in store for the South Central Conference for the second time in three years. Gillespie and Staunton, both charter members of the SCC, elected to leave the South Central for the Prairie State three years ago giving two years notice. The 2009-10 school year is the first year that both teams are competing in the PSC. However, that may change with both schools returning for the 2012-13 school year. The change is being spurred by a couple of factors. The first is the desire of schools to eliminate travel. The second occurred in March when the consolidated district of Virden and Girard voted to leave the Prairie State for the Sangamo Conference beginning in two years. Even with Bunker Hill joining the PSC next year, it would leave just seven schools and eliminate the current agreement in football for cross-over games with the Sangamo. What that means is that Prairie State members would be scrambling to find three non-conference games every year. That could mean considerable travel or matchups with schools much larger just to get 9 games on the schedule.

Lady Cavaliers roll past Jersey, Hillsboro

That record continues to climb as the Carlinville High School girls’ soccer team picked up two more wins over Jersey and Hillsboro. CHS traveled to Jerseyville for a non-conference match April 27. The Lady Cavaliers needed 12 minutes to score the game’s opening goal. Kimmy Dworzynski poked a shot past the Jersey goalkeeper after receiving a cross from Taylor Schwab.
